Question by Sara: How do I get my dog from being so dominate?
My Basset/Beagle mix is a wonderful dog. He won’t bite or even growl at anybody. But I have 3 other dogs. They are all outside dogs and I love them all. However, Buster (my Basset/Beagle) won’t let the other dogs in their dog house. The dog house is big enough for all of them it’s HUGE. I don’t know what to do. He chases them and bites them on the neck. I don’t know how to stop him. I’m at a loss.

If your dog isn’t neutered, that will certainly help.
The easiest thing you can do for the dog house problem is get 2 more dogs houses for them all, since they should all have their own anyway.
One of my foster pups had a huge problem with the dominance thing against her younger brother, and I took her aside and trained her separately with a specific command, I used “off”, to get her to let go of things. After a while, she related it to Nike, her brother, and whenever she would go near him or anything that he had (bones, toys, food, etc.), I would say “off” in a firm, almost growling tone. And, since I was her alpha, she immediately obeyed and left him alone. You may want to try this.
Also, I always fed them separately so that they could still see each other and I always gave Nike his food first, to keep from reinforcing Iris’ idea that she was the alpha dog over him.

Ignore the shock collar bit. That’s inhumane and a lazy way of training them.

Try the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Lots of campsites, and lake areas. Local cities are Lincoln, Tilton or Gilmanton.

Is it okay for my Dog to sleep outside?

Question by Dave: Is it okay for my Dog to sleep outside?
I have an 11 month old beagle mixed , and I love him to death, but my parents don’t let him sleep inside. They both grew up with many dogs and all of them were kept outside. He sleeps in his dog house in his little bed and I cover him with his blanket before I go to sleep. I would like to know if it’s okay or what can I do to keep him warm. Please no harsh comments.

He should be ok with his dog house thats awesome you cover him with a blanket before bed :)
its warm inside. Most dogs don’t even have a dog house and live outside.

Gratitude is usually attributed to dogs but not to cats why?

Question by ramswastik: Gratitude is usually attributed to dogs but not to cats why?
It really baffles me. dogs are always branded as being faithful to their masters though we do have cats also as pets. Are cats less faithful to their masters? It is said that cats are attached to their homes whilst dogs are attached to their masters.

Best answer:

Answer by peeusht
Well I have heard so and cats don’t and cannot defend their Masters as easily as dogs can .

Question by P Booo: ANY ONE EVER HAD A DOG SWALLOW A FOREIGN OBJECT?
I know a lot of dogs have done this, I am just looking for some of your experience. My 20 month old westie is in vet hospital at the mo after collapsing last night. He has something lodged in his intestines. They are operating tomorrow, I AM WORRIED SICK.Has your dog ever been operated on and had something removed and survived?

Best answer:

Answer by randomness123
Oh wow I have a westie too but mine never had a problem like that. My dog has had a limp all his life, not so sure why but it doesn’t seem to cause him any pain. We gave him calcium and vitamin D supplements to help strengthen his bones so he doesn’t limp too much. But I guess this is not as serious as an operation. I’m sure everything will be ok if its something small like a solid piece of dirt(i don’t know) but anyway good luck and best of luck to your dog.

Question by Hillary: What would be the best vacuum cleaner for hardwood floors and pet hair in the 0 and under range?

Best answer:

Answer by Jeanbug
Hit the yard sales or rummage sales for a used Rainbow vacuum. This is what I use on my hardware floors, and it does the most incredible job of nailing pet hair. I bought a used one for $ 25 five years ago and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Where can I bring my dog in snow near Portland?

Question by jamesfb77: Where can I bring my dog in snow near Portland?
I’d like to bring my lab with me when we go sledding with the kids. Where around Portland (Mt hood or wherever) is this allowed? I’d like her to run free since she absolutely loves the snow. Any specific locations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by walmeis
Just about any place on Mount Hood, except near developed ski areas.

Some popular choices—being in popular areas increases safety and comfort in case you get in over your head (literally):
* Trillium Lake Road: across from Snow Bunny. The road is closed to wheeled vehicles in winter so this is a popular Nordic ski trail with occasional snowmobiles. It has some long straight stretches with some hills, but is mostly curvy and slightly sloped.
* Snow Bunny road. Just past the play area (behind and to the left) is a road which used to be Timberline Lodge’s driveway. This is also popular with Nordic skiers and snowshoes. It is steeper and narrower than Trillium’s road, so might be better for downhill sliding.
* Bennett Pass snow park. Forest trails for Nordic, snowshoe, mushing, and some snowmobiling.. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mthood/recarea/?recid=53142

Along Highway 35 there are several other snow parks, all of which allow access to trails well away from the road. Not all are isolated from the highway, and some have trails along high steep faces, such as Tamanawas Falls trail. Choose one randomly for some adventure—if the trail character doesn’t agree with you, just drive to the next trailhead.
