Q&A: Outside pen – stones?

Question by SamiiLynn: Outside pen – stones?
At my house we have a back deck with stairs leading own into a pen for our dogs. the problem is there is clay there. every time it rains it gets so muddy, the grass is gone, and the dogs track it all in.

i was a pet lodge the other day and they have stones in their pens. would that help my sitiation?

If you have done this: What type of stones are safe for dogs? How exactly does it work? Do we dig down at all, then put stones?

Thank You!!

Does not sound too comfortable for the dogs, we use rubber mats for our horses to lay on, you can buy them at feed stores very thick and durable.
I believe they are made out of recycled tires

Another plus is you won’t have to haul stones

Question by cody l: How do you keep an indoor dog outside?
My dog Koogie was an indoor dog. But she stayed with my grandma and loved it there. But recently my grandmother got married and moved in with my grandpa and he does not like my dog. So we brought her to my house and my grandma does not like animals in the house. So we put her outside in the coal house after we cleaned it up. We put her a dog house in their and some cedar chips and a cloth bedding. How else do you keep her warm.

Question by Casper: Converting from inside to outside dogs. Opinions on the best way to do this?
I have a great pyrenese/lab mix, and two boston terriers. We were living in a mobile home park, the dogs were not allowed to be outside unless on a leash with me. We just bought a home with a backyard, I really want to be able to let them stay outside during the day, but they are not used to it. Can anyone give me ideas as to the best way to get them used to it?

I would recommend cabling them for awhile so they do not run away.. let them be on the cable while you are there so they know that it is okay…

What kind of dog can stay outside all the time??

Question by acting girl: What kind of dog can stay outside all the time??
I want a dog that will never get bigger than a full-grown cat, can stay outside with or without a dog house, preferably with a dog house, and does not bark too much. What kind of dog is right for me????????

Best answer:

NONE!

Dogs are pack animals and should be inside with their families. Small dogs really do not belong outside.

A dog chaned outside to a dog house will end up barking from boredom and lonlieness.

I dont think a dog is a good choice for you.

Is it okay for my Dog to sleep outside?

Question by Dave: Is it okay for my Dog to sleep outside?
I have an 11 month old beagle mixed , and I love him to death, but my parents don’t let him sleep inside. They both grew up with many dogs and all of them were kept outside. He sleeps in his dog house in his little bed and I cover him with his blanket before I go to sleep. I would like to know if it’s okay or what can I do to keep him warm. Please no harsh comments.

Question by oleegarza: How do I get my dog used to sleeping outside?
I have a 7 month old American Bulldog that has always slept in the house and my wife (surprisingly) is not liking the hair and nail marks on our hardwood floors. So now she wants the dog outside. I have left her outside for two nights so far and she has cried pretty much all night (the dog). At what temperature is too cold for dogs to be outside? Would she do better with a dog house with walls instead of the open crate we are using now?

Why not just let him sleep in a crate or in a bathroom?

How Cold is Too Cold Outside for my Dog?

Question by Shannon: How Cold is Too Cold Outside for my Dog?
My husband and I have a 45 lbs. 6-month old golden retriever puppy. During the winter, at what temperature should she not be left outside while we’re away at work? She stays in a covered dog run with a dog house and blanket.

Best answer:

Answer by Karen C
Dogs can withstand some pretty cold temperatures if they have shelter. Personally, I wouldn’t leave my dogs out if it gets down to 20 or below. And , also I would use straw in his house instead of a blanket. A blanket will get damp in cold weather.

Q&A: What is a good way to help my dogs stay warm while outside during the day?

Question by SadToday22: What is a good way to help my dogs stay warm while outside during the day?
I live in Michigan, and it’s actually unseasonally warm right now, and when it does get very cold I let my dogs stay inside while I am at work (can’t do it all the time, they love to distroy everything I own) so while I am at work (about 8 hrs a day) they are outdoors in a 10×10 covered dog kennel with 2 large, insulated dog houses. My dogs are both lab mixes, one about 45 lbs, and the other about 65 lbs. Any interesting suggestions on how to help them stay warm while I am at work during the day?

Why are people so against dogs living outside?

Question by Lady Vic: Why are people so against dogs living outside?
In previous posts people have asked about dog house dimensions and other matters regarding the comfort of dogs that like to live outside. These questions have had responses that berate the owners for this as “all dogs should live inside”. I own an alaskan malamute who has the freedom to choose whether he lives inside or out. These dogs can survive up to -70 and believe me they love it. When he comes inside he gets all hot and bothered and paces like a caged tiger. When he is outside he loves the cold and you can see him basking out in the harshest of temperatures. Why would people bother to answer legit questions with their useless opinions when they clearly aren’t educated in the topic?
…..not sure how to respond individualy to certain responces .. he’s a Storm Kloud pup =). I got him from Vancouver island, B.C

I think it is the owners decision on where they keep their pet, as long as it has proper shelter and food and water. That being said I decided to get a rottweiler to be a great friend to me. I just feel my best friend deserves better living conditions and more human interaction then being outside could give him. Plus I would get awfully lonely if he was never inside to keep me company!
