Question by None: How does canibalism affect pet rats?
I had car trouble and wasn’t able to get home to feed my pet rats for several days. Two of them ate the third. I’m afraid to touch them until I find out if this changes their behavior. Are they sick/crazy now? Will they attack?

Best answer:

Answer by droopydog
All animals, even humans will commit cannabalism if they are starving.

After you eat your shoes, you draw straws…

While people are probably haunted by terrible memories afterward, your rats wont change.

Here’s and Idea, get a nice kitty or puppy and lose the rats.

Q&A: Would this be an okay home situation for pet rats?

Question by Rachel D: Would this be an okay home situation for pet rats?
I want to get rats but we have three dogs at my house. However, the dogs are very rarely actually in my room (where the rats would be), and when I leave the room I always close the door behind me. Would this be an okay situation for pet rats or would the scent of dogs on my clothes and the sound of the dogs barking scare them?

Best answer:

Answer by B!nd!
Ive kept rats and dogs together in the same house for years and never had an issue.
If you have a large, secure cage- you shouldnt have to worry about the dogs breaking into the cage.
My dog was trained- she slept in my caravan with me and my rats- and she knew that she was not allowed to touch them. She really wanted to (she used to catch and eat wild rats) but she behaved herself around them.
I think if youre not even going to allow your dogs access to the room you shouldnt have a problem.
Rats are prey animals- but they are much less nervy than bunnies and guinea pigs- they usually dont mind the noise of dogs because dogs arent as much of a problem for them.
I dont think you will have a problem having rats as pets just because you have dogs.

Are newly brought home rats normally nervous, scared, or anxious?

Question by Jesse P: Are newly brought home rats normally nervous, scared, or anxious?
I just brought home two new pet rats yesterday, and neither of them like being picked up. When I reach my hand down to try to lift them up, they just dash away. Once I succeed in picking them up, however, they are fine, and crawl all over me. Will this nervousness go away as they gradually get to know me? Or will it stay?

Also, if anyone knows what some good treats would be for rats, lemme know! :D
Also, what are some ways I can get my rats to trust me? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Julia
Dont worry! they will be fine, it will go away in at least a 2 weeks. give them lots of treats (1 tbsp of veggies a day, sometimes a little fruit, occasional pizza crust stuff like that) so they like you : )
here are some great little recipes:

http://www.rmca.org/Articles/recipes1.htm

to get them to trust you, lay your hand in the cage with a treat in your palm. once they take the treats, they are trusting you. gently pick them up and talk to them softly, pet them slowly….
: )

EDIT: dont chase them with your hand or make sudden movements! this will scare em.

Question by anonymous: In the process of getting two male rats, done my homework, looking for fun tips and advice!?
I am in the process of adopting two wonderful little boy ratties, I have starter bedding and food, I am ordering the Rat Lodge (R-680) from Martin’s cages online, and I know I need a water-bottle, food bowls, a litter-box, and toys.

I was just wondering if anyone has any fun ideas for homemade toys, experience with constructing tiny outfits for halloween costumes for rats, or good tips and advice for my first pet rats! Thanks!

lol Sounds like fun. When I had my rats when I was younger, I never did that. You can get a leash for them and let them walk around your house or even your back yard (only when it’s nice and warm out)

Have fun! :)

If we keep on keeping hamsters and rats and gerbils etc, what will happen to the evolution of them?

Question by (Y)Spice&Wolf(Y): If we keep on keeping hamsters and rats and gerbils etc, what will happen to the evolution of them?
See we keep on protecting and providing them food and water. What if one day all the rodents eg. hamsters are extinct in the wild? and all that’s left is our home pets hamsters. so if we release them into the wild, they will surely die. So what if in the future hamsters and other rodents evolve into a fatter kind of rodent. and also more lazier. and also more sleepy and cannot hunt? what if they evolve into “lousier” animals? sigh… what do you think?

Well, that’s the problem with some species. Humans may do the same thing.

Do hedge apples effect rats in a negative way?

Question by Nocturnadawn: Do hedge apples effect rats in a negative way?
I want to use some hedge apples in my home for insect purposes, but I have pet rats. Will having the fruit sitting around bother them?
Ok, I know that they are non toxic and I know that cat’s and dog’s won’t go up and eat them. This question is about RAT’S. I have done some research that says the smell of the hedge apples might drive away mice. If this is the case, does anyone know if the smell will bother rat’s. That is the question, hopefully worded better. Thank you.

Hedgeapples are not toxic. They are similar to orange peels. Although, many cattle have died from hedgeapples because they get lodge in their throats and they suffocate. Your cat or dog will turn there nose away from hedgeapples.
